House B / completed

atelier ka was asked to redesign a space for a family of four and within a limited budget. The compact urban dwelling of 65 m2, situated on ground level, with a small courtyard, had to be organized in such a way that living, sleeping, cooking and a lot of storage space would still leaf a spacious feeling within the apartment.

The decision was made to extend the house into the courtyard which luckily is considered by the municipality to be permitted development, not requiring an application for planning permission. With this wooden, one story high extension, place was provided for added living space and a wall to wall kitchen. A large roof light and slender sliding doors bring the outdoors inside.

Within the apartment, built- in closets along the existing wall construction organize the space. Behind the ‘thick’ wall, storage is solved as well as access to other rooms.

The renewed apartment is economically and aesthetically designed for the contemporary state of the family and future-proof when changes appear.
